Challenge

To inform and inspire their 3,400+ employees with the many goings-on around the company, Digital Realty’s internal communications needed to facilitate a sense of connection, no matter whether employees are in the office, a data center, at home, or hybrid.

“From Dallas to Amsterdam, London to India, Singapore to Japan — we’re a real global company,” says Mitchell Kienhuis, Communications & Events Coordinator. “One of the challenges we faced was finding a way to reach people.”

At the time, their internal communications strategy was primarily focused on written communication, and any video content was either produced externally or took shape as a video conference recording. “We thought about where communication was going, and video seemed like the obvious next big thing,” says Niamh Van de Velde, Sr. Manager, Global Employee Communications.


Solution

The Digital Realty team took this as an opportunity to consolidate and streamline their internal video content into a single place. “We use Vimeo mainly for leadership and project updates,” says Niamh, noting events range from company-wide calls to executive communications (and, yep, even a team-building tango dance).

In the first six months of partnering with Vimeo, the team made over 330 videos, in part due to the ease of use of the platform. “Vimeo’s user-friendly interface helps you to easily create something without needing external editing software,” says Mitchell. In turn, the team effortlessly bring the company’s leadership in front of everyone, no matter where they work. “Being a leader also means being visible, and video helps them do that,” he adds.

“We use Vimeo for all our video internal communications, and our people have loved watching our content,” Niamh adds. “Vimeo has been massively transformational for us.”


Outcome

With over 29,000 annual views and with company-wide calls averaging 33 minutes of watch time, Digital Realty’s internal communications team has cracked the code to connect its workforce in authentic ways.

“Video is the great connector. With so many people being in so many different places, it’s the perfect way for us to add a human element to the work we do,” says Paige Turner, Sr. Manager, Global Employee Communications. “People want to feel valued and represented, and our video content allows for us to do that. In turn, people stick around.”
