To the Vimeo community:
Last month, I shared some thoughts on Vimeo, AI, and the future and asked for your feedback. It's been incredibly helpful to hear from so many of you as we navigate the evolving landscape of technology and creativity together.
As we integrate AI tools into Vimeo, our goal is to uplift and protect the creator and their creative process. Gathering this feedback ensured that our community’s voice guided our decisions and that we approached this question with transparency and inclusion.
After extensive outreach and hearing your thoughts, we are taking a definitive stance contrary to many other community websites: Vimeo will not allow generative AI models to be trained using videos hosted on our platform without your explicit consent, even if you use our free offerings. In addition, we prohibit unauthorized content scraping (by model companies) and continue to implement security protocols designed to protect user-generated content.
This decision underscores our role as a protector of creative rights and reflects our dedication to the ethical and transparent use of technology.
Many of you expressed concerns about your content's potential misuse and its implications on your creative rights. Your feedback has been invaluable. We understand that your trust is fundamental to our relationship, and we are committed to preserving that trust.
Here are some key points that shaped our decision:
Protecting creative rights: We recognize the unique value of your creative work. By committing not to use your videos to train generative AI models, we aim to safeguard your creative voice and ensure that your content remains under your control.
Transparency and control: While AI offers many benefits, it is crucial that you, our creators, have a clear and transparent understanding of when AI is being used, and you want control over how your content is used. This decision aligns with our principles of providing transparency and equipping you with control.
Community feedback: Your insights and feedback have been central to this decision. We are committed to supporting our creators who do and do not want to use AI in their creative process. We will continue this dialogue and ensure that your perspectives shape our policies and practices.
Moving forward, you should expect us to release many new services to assist creators in their creative process, their discoverability and even managing their rights. As we create these new experiences for you, our dedication to transparency and protecting your work remains unwavering.
Thank you for being an essential part of the Vimeo community. Together, we will continue to harness the power of technology to tell stories that inspire, entertain, and connect us.
